PIB PREP ENGLISH 10 COURSE SYLLABUS

This course is designed to explore all genres of American literature including poetry, short stories, novels, dramas and non-fiction. Using mentor texts, students will expand writing skills and build on grammar basics. In preparation for IB English, students will gain:
Literature Focus: 19th Century American literary classics, poetry, short stories, rhetoric
Composition: Literary Analysis and Comparative Textual Analysis - Focus: poetic devices, connotation and denotation, MLA format, thesis statements, parallel structure, transitions
Quarter 2
Literature Focus: Transcendentalism – essays by Emerson and Thoreau, American Dream – The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald– Focus: tone, structure, critical approaches to literature
Composition: Debate – Focus: organization of ideas, counter-argument
2nd Semester Study – Quarter 3
Literature Focus: Drama – Macbeth by Shakespeare, A Raisin in the Sun by Hansberry – Focus: social and historical contexts, symbolism, dramatic elements, race relations
Composition: Investigative Report – Focus: first-hand research, journalistic structures
Quarter 4
Literature Focus: Contemporary literature - Catcher in the Rye by Salinger Focus: analyzing perspective, questioning credibility, form and function
Composition: Short Fiction – focus: imagery, figurative language, theme, audience, purpose

- skills in literary criticism
- an understanding of stylistic and aesthetic qualities of texts
- strong powers of expression, both written and oral
