Critic Peter Lisca says, "in Steinbeck's fiction, women do have a place, but they seem compelled to choose between home-making and whoredom." Look at the role of women in Parts 1 & 2 of East of Eden. Does Steinbeck empower them? Or are they weak and oversimplified? Provide evidence to support your thinking. 2. The characters in East of Eden have been criticized for being closer to symbols than actual people. Consider Adam Trask, (or any other character you choose) and all that he or she represents. For example, does Adam's tie to Abel make him purely "good"and therefore, implausible? Does his "goodness" make him likable? Provide evidence to support your character. 5.
