a. Choose the theme from your specific passage. DO NOT "hammer" a theme from the novel as a whole to "fit" as the passage's theme. b. How? READ entire passage BEFORE beginning to annotate. What inference do you get? Then look at motifs, figurative language. literary elements/techniques. Come up with an assertion and turn it into your thesis where you will also state the theme. c. Be sure to state what Bronte, Shakespeare, or McCarthy is saying about the theme of the passage? Give examples d. Remember: you must answer to what PURPOSE are literary elements/techniques used? e.
